General presentation
Step into the history of the queens and kings of Navarre on this cross-border route. Between Navarre and the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, this five-day journey traces the region’s turbulent past. Over the centuries, the border has been the theatre of intense waves of exile, conquest, commerce, religious wars and dynastic conflict.
This trip takes you on an exploration of the region’s unique heritage. You travel from castles to cathedrals, from museums to traditional workshops, all the while drinking in the scenic beauty of this corner of the Pyrenees. You cross the valleys of Roncal, Salazar and Aezkoa, the forest of Iraty, and soak up unmissable panoramas. And along the way, you will uncover a remarkable gastronomic heritage of wines, cheeses, Basque chestnuts and cider.

Day by day
First day
This day is given over to the historic city of Pau. Whether on foot or by e-bike, you explore the city’s streets and discover its castle and nearby vineyards.
Second day
The road trip begins in earnest! You head for Sainte-Engrâce, with plenty of options along the way: the Holzarté footbridge, a visit to Oloron-Sainte-Marie, the house-museum of tenor Julian Gayarre in the village of Roncal… something for every taste!
Third day
This day starts with a border crossing at Saint-Pierre-de-Saint-Martin, then continues on the Spanish side at Mata de Haya. Once again, a range of experiences awaits — from cheese-dairy tastings to visits, including the reconstructed medieval village of Burgui.
Fourth day
A day as varied as you fancy, set against the backdrop of the Aezkoa valley giving way to the forest of Iraty. You might hike the Arlekia-Laurzaran trail (9 km), visit hermitages, or uncover the hidden history of the bunkers tucked among the beech groves, dating back to the Spanish Civil War.
Fifth day
On this final day on the road, you can pop into the town of Maule-Licharre, home to espadrille-making workshops. The rest of the day unfolds between castles and thermal baths, entirely at your leisure!

Château de Pau
Information
The Château de Pau, a medieval fortress and Renaissance palace, overlooks the Gave river and the Pyrenees; famous as the birthplace of Henry IV, it now houses an important national museum.

Holzarté footbridge
Information
A suspended footbridge of wood and steel in Soule (Zuberoa), perched some 150 metres above deep wooded gorges. It delivers vertigo-inducing thrills and spectacular views near Larrau, in the French Pyrenees.

Visit Oloron-Sainte-Marie
Information
Oloron-Sainte-Marie captivates with its Romanesque cathedral — a World Heritage Site —, its historic quarters on the gaves of Aspe and Ossau, its viewpoints over the Pyrenees, and its sweet treats, berets and Béarnais chocolates.

Visit Ochagavía and the Casa Koleto
Information
Ochagavía is a model of Pyrenean architecture, with its stone houses and steep roofs. Its medieval bridge over the river, its Renaissance church and the hermitage of Muskilda make it a site of great beauty.

Forest of Iraty
Information
The Forest of Iraty dazzles with its vast beech-fir woodland (one of the largest in Europe), its vibrant autumn colours, its crystal-clear rivers and its wildlife. It is mythologically linked to the Basajaun, the lord of the Basque forest who guards its ancestral mysteries.

Royal Arms Manufactory of Orbaizeta
Information
The ruins of the Royal Manufactory and the Kultur Ola centre
The ruins of the Royal Arms Manufactory of Orbaizeta stand out for their rarity as the main military-industrial complex of northern Spain in the 18th century. Built on medieval forges at the heart of the Forest of Iraty, the site comprises a village, a church and hydraulic channels that have now been reclaimed by nature.

Collegiate Church of Roncesvalles
Information
Roncesvalles marked the history of Navarre through the battle of 778 against Charlemagne and as a royal foundation of Sancho VII, whose tomb lies there. Its collegiate church and hospital have welcomed pilgrims since the 12th century, establishing itself as the quintessential Pyrenean crossing on the Way of Saint James.

Stele Museum
Information
The Stele Museum of Abaurrea Alta preserves over 30 medieval disc-shaped stelae in its original cemetery, symbolising Basque-Navarrese funerary rites. The labyrinth that houses them elevates the experience, bringing this unique Pyrenean heritage to life.

Information
Mauléon-Licharre captivates with its medieval and Renaissance castles, its status as the historic capital of the espadrille, its views over the Pyrenees and its authentic Souletin atmosphere in the French Basque Country.
